Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. Her work as Queen Latifah on television, film as well as music has earned numerous awards. These include a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. an officer in the police force. Latifah's mother and father split at the time Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah went to Catholic School in Newark, New Jersey and was raised by her family's Baptist Church. Her stage name Latifah meaning delicate and very gentle in Arabic was given to her by her cousin when she was eight. Latifah was always tall, standing 5'10" and was the center forward on her high school basketball team. The play she played in her high school Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was a beatboxer in the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was one of the founding members of the model of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He emailed the recorded to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
